ST. PAUL, MN – Jack and I are often told how happy and lighthearted we seem. It’s flattering, sure, but it wasn’t always this way. Back in the day, we were stressed, overworked, and buried under a mountain of responsibilities. It felt like we were running on fumes. We barely had time to breathe, let alone smile.
But life doesn’t have to be a marathon of stress. Over the years, we made it our mission to find the secrets behind true happiness and peace. After digging into research and making small, life-changing shifts, we discovered how to kick stress to the curb—and today, we’re sharing those tips with you.
Because you deserve to feel good. Right now.
1. Prioritize Rest and Recovery
We used to think productivity meant working non-stop. Turns out, it doesn’t. The happiest people know that rest isn’t a luxury—it’s essential. Prioritizing sleep, taking regular breaks, and allowing time to recharge actually makes you more effective and less stressed.
Try blocking off time in your day for intentional rest. Even a 10-minute break can reset your mind.
2. Practice Mindful Breathing
When we first discovered breathwork, it felt silly. How could breathing change anything? But within minutes, we felt the tension in our bodies begin to melt away. The happiest people use their breath as a tool to stay calm and present.
Here’s a simple method to try: inhale deeply for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, and exhale for 6 seconds. Repeat for a few minutes when you feel overwhelmed.
3. Let Go of Perfectionism
Perfectionism was our worst enemy. We wanted everything to be flawless—and when it wasn’t, we felt defeated. The happiest people don’t aim for perfection; they aim for progress.
Give yourself permission to make mistakes. Done is better than perfect.
4. Create Small Joyful Habits
Happiness isn’t about grand, life-altering changes. It’s found in small moments. We learned to sprinkle tiny joys throughout our day—a morning walk, a favorite song, or a cup of tea.
What’s one small thing you can do today that will make you smile? Make it a habit.
5. Set Boundaries and Say No
We used to say yes to everything, thinking it would make us successful. Instead, it made us stressed. The happiest people set boundaries and aren’t afraid to say no when needed.
You don’t have to please everyone. Protect your time and energy.
6. Cultivate Gratitude Daily
One of the most powerful shifts we made was embracing gratitude. Research shows that grateful people experience less stress and greater overall well-being. Each evening, Jack and I reflect on three things we’re thankful for—big or small.
Try starting or ending your day by writing down a few things you appreciate. It rewires your brain to focus on the good.
7. Surround Yourself with Uplifting People
Who you spend time with matters. We realized that some relationships drained us, while others lifted us up. The happiest people surround themselves with those who bring positivity and encouragement.
Evaluate your social circle. Who leaves you feeling better after spending time with them? Invest in those connections.
8. Find Purpose in What You Do
Feeling stuck and purposeless can drain happiness quickly. We found meaning by aligning our work with what we genuinely care about. The happiest people have a sense of purpose and direction.
If your current situation feels off, consider small changes that can bring more meaning to your day.
9. Embrace Nature’s Healing Power
Nature is one of the world’s greatest stress relievers. We started spending more time outdoors—whether it was a walk in the park or just sitting on our porch—and our mood shifted dramatically.
Try soaking in some sunlight, listening to birds, or simply breathing fresh air. Nature does wonders for the soul.
10. Laugh More—Even When Life Gets Hard
This might sound obvious, but laughter really is the best medicine. Jack and I made it a point to watch funny shows, tell silly jokes, and embrace playfulness even when things felt tough.
Don’t take life too seriously. Find something that makes you laugh today. A good place to start is with some dad jokes – and we have tons in the humor section of our site.
Take the First Step Today
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember this: small changes add up. You don’t have to overhaul your life overnight. Pick one or two tips from this list and give them a try. You’ll be amazed at how much better you can feel with just a little effort.
Jack and I found our joy, and we believe you can too. You deserve peace, happiness, and a life that feels good—starting now.
