Landmark Decision by USDA

In June, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the transfer of 11,778 acres of Chippewa National Forest land back to the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe.

This transfer is part of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Reservation Restoration Act, a 2020 law that addresses the wrongful land seizure by the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs in the 1940s.
