Legionella Bacteria Found in Milwaukee Suburb!
MILWAUKEE, WI – A case of Legionnaire’s disease has been confirmed by the Southwest Suburban Health Department (SWSHD). The source of the Legionella bacteria was identified in a cooling tower at a senior living facility located at 74th and Greenfield Avenue in West Allis, Wisconsin.
Understanding Legionnaire’s Disease
Legionella bacteria thrive in warm water environments, such as cooling towers, hot tubs, plumbing systems, hot water heaters, and decorative fountains. When people inhale mist from a contaminated water source, they can become ill with Legionnaire’s disease.

This illness is treatable with antibiotics and is typically not spread from person to person. However, it poses a higher risk for individuals with compromised immune systems, smokers, and those aged 50 or older.
Measures Taken to Prevent Further Cases
So far, no additional cases have been reported at the senior living facility. The SWSHD is collaborating with the facility to pinpoint the exact source of the bacteria.
Measures being implemented include the use of bottled water for drinking, halting the use of showers, faucets, and ice machines until appropriate filters are installed, repairing the cooling tower and other water distribution systems, and maintaining ongoing communication with the health department until all corrective actions are completed.
