Born in 1907, Smith moved to Minneapolis at 21 and quickly made her mark. She co-owned a hair salon, broke into the real estate world, and faced the harsh realities of racial prejudice head-on.
Determined to make a change, Smith pursued law and became the first African American woman licensed to practice in Minnesota in 1921. She was a lone figure in this field until 1945, tirelessly fighting for civil rights in the Twin Cities. Smith was a cornerstone in the local African American community, which thrived despite segregation and discrimination.
In 1925, she helped establish the Urban League in Minneapolis and, in 1930, became the first woman president of the Minneapolis NAACP. She took a bold stance in court, defending the Lee family’s right to live in a previously all-white neighborhood in 1931. Her legal battles extended to fighting segregation in public places and protecting individuals from racial violence.
Smith’s legacy extends beyond the courtroom. She used her voice to address civil rights issues with politicians, business leaders, and the media. Her home in Minneapolis, a symbol of her enduring spirit, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
