ROANOKE, VA – A lunchbox lost for over 40 years has been returned to its owner, thanks to a surprising discovery by a plumber working at a Virginia school. Tracy Drain, who thought her beloved Heathcliff lunchbox was gone forever, was reunited with the item after it was found hidden in a wall at Fairview Elementary. What began as a routine plumbing job turned into a nostalgic moment, reminding everyone how something as simple as a lunchbox can hold so many memories.
Plumber’s Unexpected Find
During a routine plumbing job at Fairview Elementary School, a plumber came across a vintage Heathcliff lunchbox hidden away in a pipe chase. The discovery was truly unexpected, and the plumber immediately found items inside the lunchbox that provided clues to its owner.
Along with the lunchbox, the plumber discovered a thermos that still carried the faint smell of hot chocolate, a drawing, and a name tag reading “Tracy Drain.” The school district posted images of the lunchbox and thermos on Facebook, asking the community for help in identifying the owner.
In their post, Roanoke City Public Schools wrote, “Inside, we found a thermos that still smells like hot chocolate, an adorable drawing, and a tag with the student’s name: Tracy Drain, who appears to have been in Mrs. Curry’s class in Room 30.”
Reconnecting the Lunchbox with Its Owner
Thanks to the power of social media, the search for Tracy Drain quickly gained traction. On December 10, 2024, the school district confirmed that they had connected with her. Tracy Drain, now an adult, picked up the lunchbox at the school where she had once attended as a child. However, Tracy admitted that she didn’t remember losing the lunchbox all those years ago.
The school district noted, “Tracy says she doesn’t remember losing the lunchbox, so we’re still not sure why or how it ended up in the wall. The only possible explanation she can think of would be if a classmate took it and stashed it there.”
Tracy attended Fairview Elementary for kindergarten through fourth grade before her family moved to Craig County. During her visit to the school to pick up the lunchbox, she brought along old photos from her time there, which were shared by the district on their Facebook page.
Nostalgic Touch: The Thermos and the Label
While many details of the lunchbox’s journey remain a mystery, Tracy did confirm one important fact: the thermos inside the lunchbox was not filled with hot chocolate, as the school district had originally speculated. Instead, it was filled with Nesquik, a popular chocolate milk powder that Tracy remembered fondly.
The school district expressed appreciation for Tracy’s mother, who had made sure to label all her children’s belongings. They wrote, “The fact that we were able to find Tracy is a testament to her mother, who always labeled her children’s belongings. It took 40+ years, but it paid off in the end.”
In a final note, the district expressed their gratitude for playing a part in this heartwarming reunion, saying, “We were honored to play a small role in getting the lunchbox back to its rightful owner.”
This heartwarming story reminds us of the unexpected surprises that sometimes lie hidden for years, just waiting for the right moment to be uncovered.
