NEW ORLEANS, LA – Three fishermen found themselves stranded in the open ocean after their boat capsized off the coast of Louisiana. With their vessel sinking beneath them, their only hope was a life raft—and a desperate call for help.
The U.S. Coast Guard sprang into action Thursday morning after receiving a distress alert from the Anthony, a fishing vessel that had sent out an emergency signal at 8:30 a.m. The boat was located about 40 miles offshore from Caillou Bay, Louisiana.
Race Against Time in the Open Water
As soon as the emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) sent out its signal, Coast Guard watchstanders at the Eighth District Command Center launched a massive rescue operation.
An urgent marine information broadcast was issued, alerting nearby vessels, while the Coast Guard Cutter Yellowfin and an HC-144B Ocean Sentry aircrew from the Aviation Training Center in Mobile rushed to the scene.
From the air, rescuers spotted a chilling sight—a life raft floating near the partially submerged vessel. A video released by the Coast Guard captures the Anthony sinking as a lone survivor waves desperately from the raft.
Dramatic Rescue as Coast Guard Arrives
When the Yellowfin reached the raft, three fishermen were huddled inside, awaiting rescue. The crew quickly brought them aboard, ensuring all were safe.
Incredibly, none of them suffered injuries despite the harrowing ordeal.
Scott Talbot, Eighth Coast Guard District Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator, emphasized the critical role of emergency preparedness in these situations.
“This rescue highlights how preparedness and a rapid response save lives. The vessel’s properly registered EPIRB provided accurate coordinates, enabling our crews to pinpoint and reach these fishermen quickly,” Talbot stated.
“Our crews train to respond swiftly, but preparedness on both ends saves lives.”
The fishermen say they were lucky to have the right safety equipment—and a Coast Guard team ready to act at a moment’s notice!
