One of the unique features of the Luce Line State Trail is the variety of surfaces you’ll encounter throughout your journey. From crushed limestone between Plymouth and Winsted to smooth pavement between Winsted and just west of Hutchinson, the trail transitions to gravel between Hutchinson and Cedar Mills, and finally, to a mowed grass path between Cedar Mills and Cosmos. This diversity in surfaces adds to the overall experience, allowing you to explore different textures and terrains.

As you traverse the trail, you’ll find yourself immersed in a changing landscape that includes woodlands, marshes, and lakes. A portion of the trail even runs through remnants of the Big Woods, where you’ll be surrounded by majestic stands of maple and basswood trees. 🚂 A Trail with a Rich History

The Luce Line State Trail has a fascinating history that dates back to 1908 when it was known as the Electric Short Line. This railroad moved goods and passengers in and out of the Twin Cities, playing a crucial role in the region’s development. Later renamed the Luce Line after the family who owned and extended it, the railroad ceased operations, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources acquired parts of the corridor to create the state’s first nature trail in 1970.

Over the years, the trail has undergone various improvements and expansions. By 1975, the state owned most of the right of way, and between 1977 and 1980, the trail was built to Winsted. In 2015, a significant milestone was achieved when a 23-mile section between Winsted and Hutchinson was paved, enhancing the trail’s accessibility and user experience.
