WINONA, MN – Adam Fravel, charged with the murder of Madeline Kingsbury, will now face trial starting October 7 in Blue Earth County. The trial was relocated from Winona County, Minnesota by order of Judge Nancy Buytendorp, who determined that Blue Earth County would offer the necessary impartiality for a fair trial.

The case has garnered significant attention, especially after Kingsbury’s disappearance sparked a large-scale search that lasted nearly ten weeks.

Her body was eventually discovered in Mabel, Minnesota, close to property owned by Fravel’s parents. Fravel, who was Kingsbury’s ex-boyfriend and father to their two children, initially denied any involvement in her disappearance.

The last confirmed sighting of Kingsbury was on March 31, when she and Fravel dropped their two children, ages 2 and 5, off at daycare.

Fravel was indicted on first-degree murder charges, with prosecutors arguing that the crime was premeditated and part of a history of domestic abuse.

Despite attempts by Fravel’s defense team to dismiss the charges, Judge Buytendorp upheld the grand jury’s decision in June. She also granted the prosecution’s request to pursue an enhanced sentence if Fravel is convicted, due to his efforts to conceal Kingsbury’s body.

The decision to change the trial’s location came after concerns were raised about Fravel’s ability to receive a fair trial in Winona County.

His defense team cited extensive media coverage and a public-opinion poll to argue for the change, which the judge approved.

Fravel was taken into custody in June, shortly after the discovery of Kingsbury’s remains.

Unsealed search warrants revealed that friends and family were aware of the abusive nature of Kingsbury and Fravel’s relationship, and that Kingsbury had been trying to leave him.

According to the warrants, Fravel allegedly told Kingsbury, “If you donā€™t listen, youā€™ll end up like Gabby Petito,” referring to the social media influencer who was killed by her boyfriend in 2021. Fravel later claimed the comment was made in jest.
