DAMARISCOTTA, ME – A popular seafood restaurant in coastal Maine that would normally be bustling over the Labor Day holiday was destroyed in a fire early Sunday, fire officials said.

The Damariscotta Fire Department responded to the blaze at the Schooner Landing and Marina in Damariscotta along with five neighboring fire departments at around 3 a.m. Sunday.

Fire Chief John Roberts told WMTW that the building’s location on a pier made fighting the fire a challenge.

“The access was very difficult because we had to access from above with deck guns,” said Roberts. “And then we also had to access the underneath to the restaurant because it’s on piers.”

Main Street in Damariscotta was closed from the Damariscotta/Newcastle bridge to Bristol Road intersection while firefighters worked at the scene. The fire was extinguished around 7:30 a.m., and the road was reopened.

No one was injured in the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

“Grateful is the theme of the day. From the mutual aid partners that stepped up to help us at 3 Am this morning to the community that helped us with food and coffee.Ā Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” the fire department wrote on Facebook.

“Scott and his team will resurrect Schooner and it will rise from the ashes like it did 30 years ago.”
