PINE VALLEY, CA — U.S. Border Patrol agents thwarted a major drug smuggling operation on Sunday night, intercepting 198 pounds of methamphetamine at a checkpoint along Interstate 8. The seizure occurred around 8:51 p.m. near Pine Valley, California, as agents assigned to the Campo Station conducted routine inspections.

Traffic Stop Leads to Major Find

The incident began when agents pulled over a westbound truck at the Campo Border Patrol Checkpoint. After a brief interview with the driver, suspicion prompted the agents to call in a Border Patrol K-9 unit. The trained dog quickly signaled the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle, leading to a thorough search.

In the bed of the truck, agents located an aftermarket compartment containing 35 foil-wrapped packages. Testing confirmed the contents as methamphetamine, with a total weight of 198.33 pounds.

Authorities estimated the street value of the seized drugs at approximately $436,300.

Driver and Drugs Turned Over to DEA

Following the bust, both the driver and the narcotics were handed over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for federal prosecution. The truck involved in the smuggling attempt was confiscated by Border Patrol agents.

San Diego Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Jeffrey D. Stalnaker praised the agents’ efforts, noting their round-the-clock commitment to stopping dangerous drugs from reaching communities across the country.

He emphasized that such operations play a vital role in safeguarding lives nationwide.
