So, what’s the scoop? Well, according to the folks over at the World Population Review, they’ve crunched the numbers and identified the top 20 drunkest cities in the United States for this year. And guess what? Southern Minnesota‘s own Mankato made the list!
Now, before we dive deeper into this story, let’s get some facts straight. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) defines excessive drinking as consuming five or more drinks on one occasion for men and four or more drinks for women. And what counts as a “drink”? It’s pretty standard:
- 12 ounces of beer
- 8 ounces of malt liquor
- 5 ounces of wine
- 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits or liquor (that’s 40% alcohol content, folks).
Why is Mankato, MN on List of Drunkest Cities in America?
Mankato only has a population of around 44,488, as per the 2020 census. It’s the 5th-largest city in Minnesota, outside the Twin Cities metro. But why is it on the list of Drunkest Cities in America?
Here’s our theory: Mankato is also home to Minnesota State University, Mankato (MNSU). With over 14,000 students enrolled there, it’s not surprising that Mankato has earned the 12th spot on this year’s list of Drunkest Cities in America. You know how college students like to unwind!
Wisconsin Tops the List!
Now, let’s put this in perspective. While Mankato is the only Minnesota city on the list this year, our neighbors over in Wisconsin seem to have taken the crown. Wisconsin, famously known as America’s Dairyland, has a whopping nine cities on the list. It’s also home to the Drunkest City in America!
