BRIDGEWATER, MA – A worker in Massachusetts was rescued Tuesday after being buried up to his waist in a train car full of coal for several hours, officials said.
The Bridgewater Fire Department responded at around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday to Cook Street, near the Stiles and Hart Brick Company, where firefighters found the worker conscious and alert but trapped in the train car, which was carrying coal.
“He is in no distress at this time, alert, conscious breathing talking to us the entire time, just unable to remove himself,” Bridgewater Deputy Fire Chief Glen Grafton told reporters while the rescue was underway.
The fire department called in the Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team for specialized assistance. Crews used a vacuum truck to remove some of the coal from around the trapped worker, then used a pulley system suspended by a ladder truck to eventually hoist the man free at around 1:30 p.m.
The worker was loaded onto a stretcher and taken to a waiting ambulance for transport to the hospital.
It’s unclear how the worker became trapped in the coal car.
