HIDALGO, TX – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents in Texas recently intercepted over $4.2 million worth of illegal drugs from a van attempting to cross into the U.S. at the Hidalgo Port of Entry. This significant seizure took place when CBP officers stopped the vehicle, which was later found to be carrying a large shipment of methamphetamine and heroin.

At approximately 1:00 p.m. on December 13, a 2013 Chrysler van arrived at the Hidalgo Port of Entry’s International Bridge. CBP officers referred the vehicle for secondary inspection after an initial examination raised suspicion. Using advanced non-intrusive inspection systems and working alongside trained canine units, officers discovered 32 packages concealed inside the van.

Contents and Estimated Value

Out of the 32 packages found, 30 were filled with a total of 442 pounds of suspected methamphetamine. The remaining two packages contained 18 pounds of heroin.

The estimated street value of the drugs seized exceeds $4.29 million, marking this as one of the larger drug busts at the Texas border this year.

CBP’s Efforts and Next Steps

Carlos Rodriguez, the Port Director of Hidalgo, commented on the operation, saying, “This is a high-value, combination load of narcotics and this interception reflects our CBP officers’ effective use of inspections experience, training, and technology to successfully zero-in on this seizure and prevent this poison from reaching our streets.”

Following the discovery, CBP agents turned over the seized narcotics and the van to state and local authorities involved in the High Intensity Drug Task Force (HIDTA). The driver of the vehicle was arrested, and a criminal investigation is now underway. The collaboration between federal and local agencies continues to play a crucial role in fighting the flow of illegal drugs into the U.S.
