Cops: “Suspect Has Multiple Gerbils In His Pants!”
COLUMBUS, OH – In a series of unusual events that left both Columbus, Ohio, residents and police scratching their heads, a man was arrested after a spree of burglaries, found with several hamsters in his pants. The suspect, 31-year-old Matthew Pancake, now faces charges of breaking and entering, and vandalism.

A Night of Chaos and Confusion
The commotion began around 2 a.m. on Tuesday when Columbus police responded to reports of multiple break-ins. The first call came from a Famous Footwear store, followed by a nearby Petland store, and lastly, a Roosters restaurant. Surveillance footage showed a man in leopard-print pajamas at the restaurant.

Outside the Petland store, officers were met with a scene of chaos: smashed kennels, and various animals running loose in the parking lot. Among the animals were two dogs, multiple birds, a hamster, and at least two rabbits.
The Unlikely Suspect
Just 100 yards away from Petland, officers found Pancake asleep on a bench. He was wearing a leopard-print onesie, matching the description from the surveillance footage. As they arrested him, officers discovered what they initially thought were gerbils in his pants. The critters were later identified as hamsters.

During the arrest, an officer can be heard on bodycam footage, exclaiming, āOh! There are gerbils in there!ā followed by, āWe got the gerbil bandit.ā
Searching for Answers
The motive behind Pancakeās bizarre actions remains unclear. Columbus Police Sergeant Joe Albert expressed his bewilderment, telling reporters, āItās very odd. Obviously, we donāt know what this individual is going through.ā
The police are still investigating the circumstances leading to Pancakeās peculiar behavior and the series of break-ins.
The Aftermath
Pancake was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries, as officers found blood at the scene. He was later booked into Franklin County Jail. The animals rescued from the Petland store were unharmed and returned to safety.
