WINCHESTER, KY — A 15-year-old girl was struck and killed by a school bus while crossing the street in Kentucky on Tuesday morning, authorities said. This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of how fragile life is and how, in an instant, everything can change.
McKenna Letcher, described by those who knew her as a bright and loving young woman, was fatally hit by a Clark County Public Schools bus as she attempted to cross Veterans Memorial Parkway near Ironworks Road, according to the Clark County Coroner.
Our hearts truly break for the Letcher family. There are no words to describe the kind of grief that comes with losing a child so suddenly. But we can find comfort in knowing that God is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). McKenna is in His loving arms now, and her family can lean on Him for the strength they need to get through these dark days.
“The Clark County Public Schools family is heartbroken today,” Superintendent Dustin Howard said in a statement. While he didn’t name Letcher, he confirmed she was a student at George Rogers Clark High School.
Superintendent Howard added that grief counselors, pastoral staff, and other mental health professionals would be available at GRC High School and other schools in the district.
As the community gathers to mourn, it’s important to come together, not only in grief but in prayer, trusting that God will provide peace that surpasses all understanding, even in the darkest of times.
“Please keep the student’s family, along with the entirety of our school system and community, in your thoughts and prayers as we work through this very difficult time,” Howard added.
There’s no doubt that McKenna’s family will need the strength of their faith and the prayers of those around them to get through such a devastating loss.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear also expressed his heartbreak on X, formerly known as Twitter. “My heart aches for the family and friends of this precious child lost in this tragedy,” he wrote. “Please join Britainy and me in lifting up the Clark County community in prayers of peace and comfort.”
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office and the coroner’s office are continuing to investigate the fatal crash. Meanwhile, the community is left holding tightly to their faith, seeking solace in God’s promise of eternal life.
