MEMPHIS, TN – Two armed men in Memphis, Tennessee forced a driver from his car, but their plan unraveled when they couldn’t figure out how to start it—just minutes after they were caught on video rummaging through another vehicle nearby.

Ignition Trouble Stops Carjackers in Their Tracks

According to the Memphis Police Department, officers responded to a carjacking report on the 3600 block of Spottswood Avenue on Saturday, October 12th, around 7:28 a.m. A red Ford Escape was targeted by two armed men who approached the vehicle from a gray Nissan Altima.

The suspects demanded the driver exit the car. Once the victim fled, the men jumped inside the Escape. However, their getaway plan fell apart when they couldn’t start the engine. They abandoned the Ford Escape and drove off in the gray Nissan Altima they arrived in.

Caught on Camera: Neighborhood Burglary Spree

Police reviewed surveillance footage from cameras in the area and uncovered more incriminating activity. Just minutes before the attempted carjacking, the same two suspects were caught burglarizing an open convertible parked nearby.

On Wednesday, Memphis police released the surveillance video, hoping the footage will assist in identifying the suspects.

The police provided detailed descriptions of the suspects. Both are described as Black males, approximately 18 to 25 years old, and between 5’9″ and 5’11” tall.

  • Suspect 1: Wore a green hoodie with blue shorts and was armed with a handgun.
  • Suspect 2: Wore a gray hoodie with black pants and was also armed with a handgun.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the suspects to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously for those who prefer to stay confidential.
