ANN ARBOR, MI – A man was rescued in Michigan Monday night after he fell asleep on train tracks and became stuck under a train that ran him over, officials said.

The City of Ann Arbor Fire Department said firefighters responded to the Ann Arbor Railroad Tracks between Huron Street and Miller Road at around 9:37 p.m. Monday after a person was reported to be stuck under a train.

Firefighters arrived to find a 20-year-old man had been run over by a northbound freight train after he fell asleep on the tracks.

“The train was traveling at a very slow speed and was able to stop within a relatively short distance,” the fire department said. The man was lying between the rails under the train, and although he survived, his hand was “entangled” in the rear axel of the lead locomotive, pinned between the wheel, axel and wear gear.

“Due to the patient’s location combined with strength of the metal of this part of the locomotive, extrication efforts were incredibly challenging,” the fire department said.

As rescuers approached the one-hour mark without freeing him, the Ann Arbor Police Department transported the crew from a Michigan Medicine Survival Flight and a surgical team from the University of Michigan Department of Surgery in preparation for a possible field amputation.

Nearly an hour later, at the 110-minute mark, rescuers were able to extricate the victim. He was transported by Huron Valley Ambulance to University of Michigan Hospital in stable condition.

“This was a once in career incident for those involved,” the fire department said. “Normally, person versus train incidents are fatal. This was a true team effort.”
