Minneapolis, Minnesota – In the race of education, not all states are crossing the finish line. A recent study by the United States Census Bureau has unveiled some surprising figures. California, the giant with the most people, is also leading in a not-so-proud category: it has the highest number of folks who didn’t finish high school. Only 84.7% of its residents over 25 have a high school diploma or more.
Texas and Louisiana are not far behind, with 86.1% and 87.3% respectively. Other states that need to catch up include Nevada, Mississippi, New York, New Mexico, Alabama, Kentucky, and West Virginia.
On the brighter side, Vermont is setting an example with 95% of its people having at least a high school diploma. Maine, New Hampshire, Montana, and Minnesota are also doing well, with more than 94% in each state.
But it’s not just about high school diplomas. A separate study by WalletHub shows that Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maryland are the brainiest states overall.
West Virginia, Mississippi, and Louisiana, however, are lagging behind in education. Factors like lower high school completion rates, fewer college grads, and weaker scores in math and reading are holding these states back.
In the Midwest, Minnesota is leading the pack with 94% high school graduates or higher. North Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Michigan, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana are also doing fairly well, with over 90% in most of these states.
It’s clear that education is a mixed bag across the U.S., with some states excelling and others struggling. Let’s hope for a future where every state makes the grade!
