MINNEAPOLIS, MN – A woman remains in critical condition, relying on a ventilator after a violent incident inside a Minneapolis apartment early Tuesday morning. Authorities say her outlook is grim, with the potential for upgraded charges depending on whether she survives her injuries.
Calvin Doise Little, 35, has been charged with first-degree assault. The attack took place inside an apartment on the 400 block of West Lake Street, located in the Lyn-Lake neighborhood.
Police Discover Victim Unconscious and Suspect Covered in Blood
Responding to an assault call at around 1:10 a.m., officers found the woman severely injured, lying near the doorway of the apartment. She was bleeding heavily and struggling to breathe, exhibiting signs consistent with near-death breathing patterns.
Inside the apartment, police located Little asleep on the bed, with blood covering his body and dried stains on his hands. Officers described his demeanor as highly agitated and noncompliant during both his arrest and transport to jail.
Argument Escalates to Violence
According to statements made to investigators, Little’s girlfriend said that she and the victim had come to the apartment after Little had been drinking heavily throughout the day. An argument between Little and the victim soon escalated, leading to a physical altercation.
The victim reportedly grabbed a kitchen knife in an attempt to defend herself, but Little disarmed her and began punching her repeatedly in the head. His girlfriend also reported being struck during the incident, prompting her to leave the apartment with her two children.
Neighbor Describes Chaotic Scene
Another witness told authorities she was awakened by sounds of screaming and the noise of children running in the hallway. When she opened her door, she saw Little, who appeared intoxicated and enraged, threatening her as he tried to force his way into her apartment. The victim was lying injured in the hallway at the time.
Suspect Claims No Memory of the Assault
When officers arrested Little, he appeared intoxicated, with severely bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcohol. Police described him as confrontational and uncooperative throughout his time at the scene, at the hospital, and later at the jail.
During questioning, Little admitted to being drunk but claimed he had no memory of the events leading to his arrest, saying only that he had been upset with his girlfriend earlier that day.
Victim’s Condition Critical; Charges May Be Upgraded
Medical professionals have indicated that the woman’s prognosis is poor, and she remains on a ventilator. Authorities warn that if she does not survive, additional charges will likely be filed against Little.
