MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Daniel James Felton, a 32-year-old former band and choir teacher at DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis, has been charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct. The charges stem from allegations made by a former student. Felton is scheduled to appear in court on September 3 at 1:35 p.m.
Allegations and Evidence
The accusations against Felton involve multiple instances of sexual assault. According to the complaint, Felton began messaging the victim on Instagram in April 2022. Initially, the messages were supportive but soon took a sexual turn.
In one incident, Felton allegedly drove the victim to an empty parking lot under the guise of giving her a ride home, where he is accused of molesting her.
Additional assaults reportedly occurred between April and August 2022, including incidents in Felton’s car and a car wash parking lot.
The victim, who was reportedly coerced into continuing to accept rides from Felton to prevent him from informing her mother of their interactions, provided police with Instagram messages exchanged between April and September 2022.
These messages included expressions of affection, disillusionment with Felton’s marriage, and sexually explicit comments.
School’s Response
DeLaSalle High School, located on Nicollet Island, confirmed that Felton left his position in the summer of 2022, before the allegations came to light. The school stated that it was unaware of the accusations while Felton was employed or while the student attended the institution.
In response to learning about the charges, DeLaSalle reported the matter to the Minneapolis Police Department and pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
The school also noted that Felton had undergone a comprehensive criminal background check prior to his hiring, which did not reveal any prior criminal activity. DeLaSalle emphasized its commitment to student safety and continued support for its students’ well-being.
