MINNEAPOLIS, MN – A Minnesota man who recklessly took the life of a beloved special education teacher and left her husband fighting for his life in a coma received just over 13 years in prison—a staggeringly lenient sentence for such a tragic and preventable loss. This unjust outcome highlights a grim reality in our justice system, where a moment of reckless driving can shatter lives and families forever, yet the consequences seem woefully inadequate.

Quintin Hudson, 21, has been sentenced to 165 months in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to fleeing a peace officer, which resulted in death and great bodily harm. In a plea agreement, two additional charges of criminal vehicular homicide were dropped.

The High-Speed Pursuit: A Deadly Decision

The events unfolded on July 8, 2023, when Hudson was driving a Tesla at high speeds, reportedly reaching 90 miles per hour, while making erratic lane changes. He caught the attention of law enforcement, prompting an attempt to pull him over.

Rather than stopping, Hudson accelerated, ultimately running a stop sign and colliding with the minivan driven by Emily Gerding, a 34-year-old mother of two, who was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. Her husband, John Gerding, also 34, suffered severe injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, and remained in a coma for several days following the crash.

Hudson was driving without a valid license at the time, possessing only an instructional permit. When questioned about his refusal to stop for police, he indicated that he simply did not want to comply.

The investigation also revealed that the Tesla was a rental vehicle, and authorities found Hudson in possession of a large sum of cash and various cards during his arrest.

Community Impact: A Profound Loss

Both Emily and John Gerding were dedicated educators at Coon Rapids Middle School, making their loss especially impactful on the community.

The Hennepin County Attorney emphasized the profound loss felt by the community, pointing out that Hudson’s reckless actions not only took Emily away from her family but also left her husband with life-altering injuries. The attorney stated that the plea agreement was a necessary step to ensure accountability and safeguard the community.

Hudson’s sentencing hearing is set for December 12, where the full extent of his actions will be addressed.
