MINNEAPOLIS, MN – A 37-year-old woman from Minnesota, Christin L. Vannett, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter following the death of her two-year-old daughter from a fentanyl overdose at a Minneapolis shelter. The tragic incident occurred on May 28 at the Higher Ground emergency shelter on Glenwood Avenue North.
In this time of sorrow, let us honor the memory of the young girl by praying for her and all affected by this tragedy.
As we reflect on her short life, we are reminded of Matthew 18:10, which says, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.” May her memory inspire us to cherish and protect the innocence of every child.
According to reports, the child was found unresponsive in her living space at around 5:30 p.m. Despite efforts by emergency responders to administer NARCAN and perform CPR, the child was declared dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The criminal complaint reveals that police discovered signs of drug use in the apartment, such as capped needles and other drug-related items. Vannett initially told police that she had been sleeping with her daughter on her chest and found her unresponsive when her partner returned home.
During the investigation, Vannett reportedly handed over a plate with a white powder, suggesting it might be fentanyl. Subsequent tests confirmed that the powder was fentanyl, and further searches uncovered additional pills and needles.
Vannett later told investigators that she had taken medication for a twisted ankle earlier that day but denied knowing about the fentanyl on the plate. She did admit to using fentanyl earlier in the morning.
An older daughter of Vannett’s also provided information about witnessing drug use in the apartment.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office reported that the child had a significant amount of fentanyl in her system, determining the cause of death as acute fentanyl toxicity. If found guilty, Vannett could face up to ten years in prison.
