MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Imagine if the man you once trusted to protect and serve was secretly tracking your every move. The person sworn to uphold the law, using his badge to invade your privacy. For one Minnesota police sergeant, that nightmare became a reality when she discovered a hidden AirTag planted on her car by a fellow officer—someone she thought she could trust.

A Minneapolis police sergeant is facing serious charges after allegedly using an Apple AirTag to track a fellow officer. Prosecutors say the sergeant, Gordon L. Blackey, also accessed private data illegally, deepening the concerns over his behavior.

The Discovery of the AirTag

The unsettling incident began on March 18 when the victim, a police sergeant herself, noticed something suspicious. While driving with her daughter in Ham Lake, her daughter’s iPhone alerted them that an unknown AirTag was tracking their movements. After hours of searching, the victim found the device hidden in her car’s wheel well.

When she checked the AirTag’s serial number, it linked back to Blackey, a 59-year-old officer from St. Anthony. The two had once been in a romantic relationship, which had ended over a year before. The next day, when the victim confronted Blackey, he admitted to placing the tracker on her vehicle, explaining that it was because he “cared about her.”

An Uncomfortable History

The victim described her discomfort with Blackey’s actions and his pattern of intrusive behavior. According to her statement, Blackey had shown up unexpectedly at places she visited and seemed to know personal details about her life that he should not have known. Despite her telling him to stop, Blackey continued to invade her privacy.

A particularly troubling encounter occurred in late April when the victim was at a restaurant in Blaine. She was shocked to see Blackey there, seemingly by coincidence, but given his history of following her, the incident raised more red flags.

Law Enforcement Takes Action

In May, the victim reported these unsettling experiences to her local police department. The case was then handed over to the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office, which launched an investigation into Blackey’s actions.

During their investigation, authorities discovered that Blackey had accessed sensitive data from a police database, which he was authorized to use as an officer. However, prosecutors say he had no valid reason to look up the private driver’s license information of the victim’s father and one of her coworkers.

Further digging into Blackey’s Apple iCloud account revealed that he had photographed this confidential information in early March, adding more evidence of his misconduct.

Facing Charges

Blackey is now facing multiple charges, including harassment, unauthorized use of a tracking device, and unauthorized acquisition of nonpublic data. If convicted, he could face nearly a year in jail and substantial fines.

Victim Speaks Out

The emotional toll on the victim has been significant. In her statements, she described feeling constant anxiety and losing sleep over the situation. The stress has also affected her work performance, adding to the long list of ways Blackey’s actions have impacted her life.

As this disturbing case unfolds, the breach of trust and misuse of authority by Blackey serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by those who abuse their power.
