ST. PAUL, MN — A recent comment from Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has highlighted a surprising lack of knowledge about “hot dish,” a staple of Minnesota cuisine. The controversy began when Walz mentioned that he wasn’t “much of a spice guy,” leading to a conversation with Vice President Kamala Harris.
The “White Guy Tacos” Comment
In a campaign video released on Friday, Walz explained to Harris that his idea of “white guy tacos” involves simple ingredients like ground beef and cheese.
When Harris jokingly asked if this meant “mayonnaise and tuna,” Walz replied, “Pretty much,” and added, “Black pepper is the top of the spice level in Minnesota.”
This exchange quickly gained attention online.
The Hot Dish Controversy
After the video was posted, some critics revisited an old social media post from January 2022, where Walz proudly shared his “award-winning recipe for Turkey Taco Tot Hotdish.”
This recipe had won first place in the 2016 Minnesota Congressional Delegation “Hotdish Off,” an annual competition among Minnesota’s U.S. Senators and Representatives.
The Misunderstanding of “Hot”
The confusion stemmed from a misunderstanding of the term “hot dish.” Some thought it referred to spicy food, but in reality, “hot dish” refers to a type of casserole served hot from the oven, with no implication of spice.
The incident has drawn attention to the regional differences in American cuisine, particularly the unique dishes of the Midwest.
