The recall affects models sold across the U.S. and Canada, with the potential for the mowers to overheat, posing a real danger to users. If you’re using one of these popular mowers, it’s time to act fast—Kawasaki is urging customers to stop using the machines immediately to avoid any serious accidents.

What Models Are Affected?

The recall specifically involves John Deere ZTrak Zero Turn Mowers with Kawasaki engines. The affected models are:

  • Z720E
  • Z730M
  • Z740R
  • Z760R

These mowers are easily recognizable by their green and yellow color scheme, with the “John Deere” logo printed just below the seat. The serial number, which is critical for identifying recalled units, can be found on the right side near the rear tire.

The Fire Hazard

The issue lies with the voltage regulator in the engine, which can fail during use or while the mower is stored. When this happens, the engine may overheat, leading to the potential for fires or burns.

Kawasaki has received five reports of actual fires and 26 incidents of the mowers melting or smoking. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, but the risk remains significant.

What Should Consumers Do?

If you own one of the recalled mowers, Kawasaki advises you to immediately stop using it and reach out to an authorized John Deere dealer for a free repair.

The recall impacts units sold between October 2018 and September 2024, ranging in price from $8,000 to $11,500. About 39,000 units were sold in the U.S. alone, with an additional 2,600 sold in Canada.
