WINONA, MN – A tragic scene unfolded in Winona, Minnesota on Friday. Earlier this week, the Eau Claire Police Department alerted law enforcement agencies in southeastern Minnesota about a homicide suspect believed to be in the area.
The suspect, Scott Adam Jenkins, 59, from Rochester, MN, was wanted in connection with a homicide in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Police warned that Jenkins was likely armed and dangerous, carrying a handgun.
Homicide Suspect Dies in Apparent Suicide After Winona Police Stop
The situation escalated on the evening of September 6, when a Winona Police officer spotted Jenkins’ vehicle.
The officer saw the car traveling along Highway 43 before it merged onto Interstate 90 in Winona. The officer followed Jenkins and, with the support of other officers, initiated a traffic stop near mile marker 233.
Suspect Found Deceased in Vehicle
According to an official press release from the Winona Police Department, officers gave Jenkins multiple verbal commands to exit his vehicle, but he remained unresponsive.
After some time, police approached the car and discovered Jenkins slumped over in the driverâs seat with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“Jenkins was confirmed deceased, and a handgun was recovered from the vehicle,” the department stated. No one else was in the car at the time.
Homicide Investigation Continues
Multiple agencies assisted in the operation, including the Winona County Sheriffâs Office, St. Charles Police Department, the Minnesota State Patrol, and the St. Charles Ambulance Service. Eau Claire Police have been informed of Jenkins’ death and are continuing their investigation into the homicide case.
