FARIBAULT, MN – A man was found unresponsive inside a manhole Friday morning in Faribault, Minnesota, sparking questions about what led to the tragic event. Despite the quick response from emergency crews, the man did not survive, and authorities are now investigating why he was in the manhole in the first place.

Missing Information Raises Questions

Officials have yet to explain why the man entered the manhole. This crucial piece of the puzzle remains unclear as the investigation unfolds.

At around 7:31 a.m. on Friday, first responders from the Faribault Fire Department, local police, and other agencies rushed to the 1900 block of Second Avenue NW after receiving a report of a person found unresponsive inside a manhole.

Toxic Gases Found at the Scene

Firefighters tested the air within the manhole and discovered dangerous levels of hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide, along with low levels of oxygen. These toxic gases made the rescue operation extremely hazardous.

Despite the risky conditions, firefighters entered the manhole and placed an oxygen mask on the victim. The man was then pulled out and rushed by North Ambulance to a waiting helicopter for medical transport. Sadly, the man’s condition worsened, and he passed away.

Ongoing Investigation

An investigation is currently underway to determine the full circumstances of the incident. The Minnesota Duty Officer has contacted OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) to assess workplace safety concerns. While the toxic gases in the manhole are clear factors in the death, the bigger mystery remains why the man was inside the manhole in the first place.

Faribault Fire Chief Dustin Dienst expressed the community’s sorrow, saying, “This is a tragic event, and our hearts go out to the family and friends of the individual.”
