APPLE VALLEY, MN – In a nightmare scenario, an Apple Valley, Minnesota home turned into a deadly battlefield, leaving one woman tragically dead and her family shattered. A man responsible for the fatal shootout, Willie John Selmon II, now faces a 10-year prison sentence. But is that enough justice for such a brutal, terrifying incident?

This could happen to anyone. Imagine an ordinary day, your loved ones nearby, when suddenly, a violent gun battle erupts on your own driveway. That’s exactly what happened to 49-year-old Michelle McGill, who was caught in the crossfire between her ex-partner and her own son. And now she’s dead, leaving behind a horrifying reminder that life can change in an instant.

A Family Feud Spirals Into Carnage

This wasn’t some random crime. It wasn’t a stranger lurking in the shadows. This was a man Michelle once trusted, once loved. Willie Selmon, 41, returned to McGill’s home on Oriole Drive in Apple Valley on July 10, 2022, under the guise of retrieving his belongings after their relationship ended. But instead of a quiet exchange, the situation exploded into violence.

When Selmon arrived, Michelle’s son, Billy Joe Pryor Jr., 27, was waiting. What should have been a tense but manageable situation soon escalated into deadly chaos. Gunfire erupted, shattering any hope of a peaceful resolution. The first bullet hit Selmon in the face, and from there, the situation only grew more horrifying.

Pryor, who had backed his vehicle near Selmon’s, showed no hesitation. He fired again and again, determined to finish the job. And in the middle of it all—innocently caught between the two men—was Michelle.

Caught in the Crossfire: No One Is Safe

As bullets flew, Michelle tried to protect herself, but there was no escape. She was hit ten times. Ten. Shot down in her own driveway by the men she knew best. By people she should have been able to trust.

Witnesses stood by, helpless, as Selmon fled the scene, bleeding from his wounds. His tan SUV sped away, carrying with it the remnants of a life destroyed in a matter of minutes. Police would later find Selmon at a hospital, where he tried to piece together a story of self-defense.

A Justice System That Feels Hollow

While Selmon’s guilty plea to second-degree murder may sound like justice, the state had sought a much harsher sentence—over 20 years behind bars. Instead, he was sentenced to just 10 years. For taking a life. For destroying a family. For pulling the trigger in a moment of unimaginable recklessness.

Is this really enough? Could it ever be enough? Michelle McGill is gone, and the man who helped cause her death will walk free before too long. And what about Billy Joe Pryor Jr.? His next court date isn’t until March 2025. Another family left waiting for answers, for justice that may never truly come.

The Fragility of Everyday Life

This tragedy should shake everyone to their core. It’s a stark reminder that safety is an illusion. What happened in that Apple Valley driveway could happen anywhere. To anyone. A domestic argument spiraled into a bloodbath. And a woman—someone’s mother, sister, daughter—died a violent death in front of her own home.

If this can happen in a quiet neighborhood, if loved ones can turn so violently on one another, who is truly safe? No one expects this kind of carnage on their doorstep. But for Michelle McGill, it became a terrifying reality.

Michelle McGill’s death is a tragic reminder of how swiftly violence can shatter lives. As her family struggles to move forward, they are left with the painful memory of a life taken far too soon—caught in a moment of senseless violence. We honor her memory and all those affected by this heartbreaking event, hoping for healing and a world where such tragedies no longer unfold.
