Duluth, MN – Attention, hiking enthusiasts! If you’ve been planning a trip to Minnesota’s North Shore this year, you might want to take note of some upcoming trail closures. The Superior Hiking Trail Association has announced that two of the most popular hiking loops in Minnesota will be off-limits for at least part of the year.

Bean and Bear Lakes Loop to Close in May

First up is the Bean and Bear Lakes Loop, which will be shutting down on May 15. This 2.2-mile stretch of the main Superior Hiking Trail is known for its breathtaking views of the two lakes from high up on rocky outcroppings. The closure will also affect a 1.2-mile spur trail and two campsites along the route.

Don’t worry, though – there will be a bypass option for hikers who still want to explore the area. Just keep in mind that you won’t be able to access those stunning lake views while the repairs are underway.

Split Rock River Loop Next on the List

Come September 1, it’ll be the Split Rock River Loop’s turn for some TLC. The eastern side of the loop, which includes about 1.8 miles of the main trail and two campsites, will be closed for repairs. The western side will stay open, and there will be a bypass available for through-hikers.

The Split Rock River Loop is a favorite among hikers for its winding path along the river, offering plenty of scenic views and photo ops along the way.

Repairing Years of Wear and Tear

So why the closures? According to the Superior Hiking Trail Association, both loops have been suffering from some serious erosion and tread issues due to years of heavy use and deferred maintenance. The trails and their infrastructure are also due for some updates to bring them up to modern design standards.

The association is teaming up with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to tackle these renewal projects, which will help ensure that hikers can enjoy these gorgeous trails for many years to come. The repairs will also make the trails better equipped to handle high visitor traffic and weather-related impacts.

Plan Your North Shore Adventure Accordingly

As of now, there’s no set date for when the trails will reopen – the association says it all depends on how the repair projects progress. So if you’ve got your heart set on hiking these specific loops this year, you might want to adjust your plans accordingly.

But don’t let the closures deter you from exploring all the other incredible hiking opportunities along the North Shore! With over 300 miles of trail to choose from, there’s no shortage of stunning views, challenging terrain, and peaceful forest walks to enjoy. Happy travels!
