MAPLE GROVE, MN – In a chilling case that shocked Minnesota, justice has finally caught up with one of the key players in a realtor’s tragic death. Elsa Segura, a 32-year-old Fridley resident, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for her role in the kidnapping and murder of Monique Baugh, a young mother and real estate agent whose life was cut short on New Year’s Eve 2019.

The case, which has gripped the Twin Cities for half a decade, reached a pivotal moment on Tuesday when Segura pleaded guilty to kidnapping with intent to cause great bodily harm. This plea comes after a complex legal journey that saw previous convictions overturned by the Minnesota Supreme Court earlier this year.

Prosecutors say Segura was the bait in a deadly trap, using a disposable phone to lure Baugh to a fake house showing in Maple Grove. What should have been a routine day for the 28-year-old realtor turned into a nightmare as she was ambushed, bound with duct tape, and thrown into a moving truck by Segura’s accomplices.

The horrifying sequence of events didn’t end there. The kidnappers, identified as Cedric Berry and Berry Davis, then used Baugh’s house key to enter her Minneapolis home, where they shot her boyfriend multiple times in front of the couple’s young daughters. Miraculously, he survived to call for help, but Baugh wasn’t as fortunate. She was found an hour later in a Minneapolis alley, fatally shot three times.

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty emphasized the gravity of Segura’s actions, explaining that Elsa Segura played a huge role in the murder of Monique Baugh. Moriarty told reporters she feels the 20-year prison sentence holds Segura accountable for her actions.

This case involved a total of five defendants, with Berry and Davis already serving life sentences without parole. Shante Berry, connected to both men, received probation for aiding an offender, while Lyndon Wiggins awaits retrial.

While the 20-year sentence brings a measure of closure, it feels inadequate in the face of such a heinous crime.

Monique Baugh’s memory lives on through her children and the community she served, reminding us of the preciousness of life and the enduring impact of senseless violence. As we reflect on this tragedy, we must continue to support victims’ families and work tirelessly to prevent such atrocities in the future.
