ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MN – A St. Louis County, Minnesota school bus driver was arrested Wednesday morning after being caught nearly twice over the legal alcohol limit—while driving 17 innocent children to school. It’s hard to imagine the fear and anger any parent would feel knowing that the person responsible for getting their precious kids to school safely had alcohol in their system.

The shocking incident began when a concerned citizen tipped off the sheriff’s office, saying the driver had been seen drinking alcohol while off duty the night before. This good Samaritan feared the driver wouldn’t be sober in time for his morning shift, and sadly, they were right.

Around 6 a.m., deputies visited the driver at his home. The driver claimed he wasn’t working that day, but that turned out to be a lie. Just after 7 a.m., the school district confirmed that he had started his bus route – putting 17 young lives in danger.

Thankfully, the police quickly stepped in and located the bus, pulling it over on Independence Road, north of Seville Road. Can you imagine how terrifying it must have been for those children, realizing their bus driver was being arrested? Fortunately, none of the kids were hurt, but it could have ended so differently.

District staff quickly arrived to take over, ensuring the students, who attend Southridge School in Alborn, were safely transported to their destination. Parents were quickly notified, but you can bet this will leave a scar on those families. How can you trust your child’s school transportation again after something like this?

The bus driver was immediately hauled off to the St. Louis County jail, where he now faces serious charges. Preliminary tests revealed his blood alcohol concentration was 0.16—twice Minnesota’s legal limit of 0.08. However, for school bus drivers, there’s zero tolerance for any alcohol use.

Authorities have not yet released the driver’s name, and formal charges are still pending.

This arrest is sparking outrage and concern among parents and school officials alike. The safety of our children should be non-negotiable, and the fact that someone hired to protect them could act so irresponsibly is beyond disgraceful. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
