Anne Meyer, a spokesperson for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, explains that this tradition was inspired by Scotland’s naming of snowplows. It’s a fun way to bring attention to the hard work these snow warriors do.
The first year was a snowstorm of excitement, with 24,000 suggestions and a whopping 122,000 votes! While participation has dipped a bit, the tradition remains strong, with 8,000 submissions for the latest contest.
Past winners like Plowy McPlowFace and Blizzard of Oz have Minnesota connections. Even music legend Prince got a nod with “The Truck Formerly Known As Plow.”
But it’s not just Minnesota; this snowplow naming fever has spread across the United States. States like New Mexico and Nebraska have joined the fun, with names like Sleetwood Mac and Clearopathra making the cut.
