Winona, Minnesota – Winter in the Land of 10,000 Lakes is making history, but not in the way you’d expect. The State Climatology Office calls it the “Lost Winter,” and it’s shaping up to be the warmest on record.

Temperatures are soaring, and snow is scarce. Whether it’s El Niño, climate change, or something else, Minnesotans are feeling the heat.

The Twin Cities have been unusually warm, breaking records left and right. January felt more like spring, with a record-breaking thaw lasting 24 days.

Winter events are being canceled or changed because there’s just not enough snow. The Loppet Foundation even had to make snow for their big festival and a World Cup skiing event.

Up north, where snow usually piles high, things are looking different too. Last year, Grand Marais had nearly four feet of snow. This year? Just a dusting. It’s so warm that it rained during our visit a few weeks ago. Only a couple of brief snowfalls kept the Twin Cities from being out-snowed by Nashville, Tennessee!

We’re waiting to see if this winter sets the warmth record. Even if it doesn’t, it’s been tough for businesses that depend on cold weather, like ski resorts and ice fishing lodges.

It’s a strange winter in Minnesota, with a record high in February followed by a sharp drop to 5° F. just 36 hours later. So, keep your winter gear close, because who knows what’s next?
