Duluth, Minnesota – The Land of 10,000 Lakes is a nature lover’s paradise. From sprawling prairies to dense forests, there’s no shortage of breathtaking landscapes to explore in Minnesota. But if you’re looking for a truly awe-inspiring experience, you can’t miss northern Minnesota‘s majestic waterfalls.
We’ve put together the ultimate weekend itinerary for waterfall enthusiasts. In just a couple of days, you can visit over half a dozen of Minnesota’s most spectacular falls, all located along the scenic North Shore. While the total driving time is only around two and a half hours, you’ll want to set aside plenty of time for hiking, sightseeing, and soaking in the natural beauty.
Weekend of Waterfalls Itinerary: Day 1
Your journey begins at the iconic Gooseberry Falls State Park. Just a short hike from the parking lot, you’ll find the park’s namesake falls, a must-see for any Minnesotan. Don’t forget your camera – this is a view you’ll want to remember forever.
Next, head to Tettegouche State Park, home to the tallest waterfall entirely within Minnesota’s borders. The 60-foot-tall High Falls of the Baptism River is a sight to behold. If time allows, explore the park’s other trails and falls for even more breathtaking vistas.
As you continue along Highway 61, make a quick stop at Illgen Falls. Just a few feet from the road, this smaller but no less impressive waterfall is the perfect place to stretch your legs and take in the serene surroundings.
About 30 minutes north, you’ll find the Cross River Falls. Tucked away in a peaceful setting near Wayside Park in Schroeder, this hidden gem offers a tranquil escape from the crowds.
No North Shore waterfall tour would be complete without a visit to Temperance River State Park. The park’s Hidden Falls is a true natural wonder, with a bridge offering picturesque views from above. Take a hike along the gorge to admire the stunning rock formations and rushing water.
Weekend of Waterfalls Itinerary: Day 2
On day two, head to Judge C.R. Magney State Park, just north of Grand Marais. Here, you’ll find the Upper Falls of the Brule River, a series of cascades tumbling over jagged rocks. Less than a mile down the trail, you’ll reach the mysterious Devil’s Kettle. Experts are still puzzled by where the water goes after plunging into this strange geological formation.
Your final stop is Grand Portage State Park, home to the awe-inspiring High Falls of the Pigeon River. At 120 feet tall, this is the tallest waterfall partially located in Minnesota. If you’re up for a challenge, hike the five-mile trail to the Middle Falls for an even more immersive experience.
This weekend getaway is just a taste of the countless waterfalls waiting to be discovered in Minnesota. So pack your hiking boots, grab your camera, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Love your coverage of the car accident with Mom and unborn baby dying from our city of Coon Rapids. You reported it well esp the dangers of driving under influence. Loved the Bible quote at the end..my favorite for grief healing.
