ST. PAUL, MN – Mornings can set the tone for your entire day. Starting off on the right foot doesn’t have to be complicated. We spoke with wellness experts across Minnesota to gather tips for creating a stress-free morning routine that anyone can follow.

Start Your Day the Night Before

According to Emily Larson, a wellness coach based in Minneapolis, preparation is key.

“Setting out your clothes, packing lunches, and organizing your to-do list the night before can make mornings run much smoother,” she explains.

This simple step reduces decision fatigue and allows you to focus on the day ahead without scrambling to get everything together.

Wake Up a Little Earlier

While it might feel tempting to hit the snooze button, waking up 15 to 30 minutes earlier can create a sense of calm.

“This extra time gives you breathing room to ease into your morning,” says Kate Johnson, a yoga instructor in Duluth.

She suggests using this time to stretch, meditate, or enjoy a quiet cup of coffee.

Hydrate Right Away

“Your body loses water overnight, so starting your day with a glass of water is essential,” says Matt Erickson, a nutritionist from St. Paul.

Adding a slice of lemon can enhance the flavor and provide a small boost of vitamin C.

Limit Screen Time

Many people reach for their phones as soon as they wake up. However, this habit can increase stress levels.

Kate, a wellness advocate in Rochester, advises, “Try to wait at least 30 minutes before checking emails or social media. Instead, focus on grounding yourself through mindfulness or journaling.”

Move Your Body

Getting your blood flowing in the morning doesn’t have to mean a full workout.

“Even five minutes of stretching or a quick walk can energize you and improve your mood,” says fitness trainer Alex Meyer from Mankato.

Create a Morning Playlist

This is one that I personally love.

Music can have a powerful impact on your mood. Curate a playlist with songs that make you feel calm or energized, depending on what you need. Listening to music while you get ready can make the process more enjoyable.

Eat a Nutritious Breakfast

Skipping breakfast can leave you feeling sluggish.

“Choose foods that fuel your body, like oatmeal, smoothies, or eggs,” Meyer recommends.

If you’re pressed for time, meal prep breakfast options over the weekend to grab and go.

Keep It Simple

Above all, don’t try to overhaul your entire routine at once. Wellness experts agree that small, consistent changes are the most sustainable. Start by implementing one or two of these tips and gradually add more as they become habits.

A stress-free morning doesn’t have to be out of reach. With these expert tips, you’ll be well on your way to a calmer, more intentional start to your day. Good luck—you got this!
