Rare Amur Tiger Cubs Born at Minnesota Zoo

APPLE VALLEY, MN – The Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley, Minnesota is celebrating the arrival of two rare Amur tiger cubs, born in May. The birth of these cubs is a significant win for conservationists who are striving to boost the dwindling population of this endangered species.

A New Generation

The cubs, a male and a female, were born on May 23 and have been spending their first weeks bonding with their mother, Sundari, affectionately known as Dari, in a secluded habitat.

This private setting allows the family to strengthen their bond away from public view. The zoo anticipates introducing the cubs to their public habitat by late summer or early fall.

The father of the cubs, Luka, a three-year-old tiger who joined the zoo in 2022, has sired his first offspring with this birth. The addition of these cubs marks an exciting milestone for the zoo and its ongoing conservation efforts.

Conservation Efforts

Amur tigers, also known as Siberian tigers, faced near extinction in the 1930s and 1940s. Today, there are approximately 4,500 tigers in the wild, with only about 500 being Amur tigers.

The Minnesota Zoo has been a staunch supporter of tiger conservation since its opening in 1978. The zoo actively participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Amur Tiger Species Survival Plan and supports various efforts to conserve tigers in their natural habitats.
