ST. PAUL, MN – Summer in Minnesota always seems to fly by. As we enter August, thoughts shift from barbecues and beach days to back-to-school shopping and the approaching fall season. With the change in season, the first frost is on the horizon.
According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, several Minnesota cities can expect their first frost dates soon.
Understanding the Almanac’s Predictions
The Old Farmer’s Almanac provides frost date predictions based on historical weather data. It uses the average dates of the first light freeze in locations across the United States and Canada.
A light freeze is defined as temperatures between 29 and 32 degrees Fahrenheit, which can be fatal to tender plants. The Almanac also tracks moderate freezes (25 to 28 degrees Fahrenheit) and severe freezes (24 degrees and below), though the predictions for first frost focus on the light freeze temperatures.
To offer a glimpse into the coming fall, we’ve gathered frost date predictions for several cities across Minnesota.
Frost Dates for Selected Minnesota Cities
The Old Farmer’s Almanac allows users to input their zip codes to find specific frost dates.
To simplify the process, we’ve selected several cities from different regions of Minnesota. Here are the expected first frost dates according to the Almanac:
- Albert Lea, MN – October 4th
- Detroit Lakes, MN – September 18th
