BUFORD, GA — When 16-year-old Asata Amun sprinted shoeless from her Gwinnett County, Georgia home last February, she sparked a 13-month search that finally ended with an unexpected twist in Tennessee.

The Troubled Home Life

The teen’s dramatic departure came after her father, Kwabena Amun, threatened to send her to military school over behavioral issues.

Doorbell camera footage captured their final interaction, with the father calling out as she fled into the night without any belongings.

A Complex Family Dynamic

The case took a darker turn when authorities removed Asata’s two sisters from their father’s custody amid abuse allegations – claims which Mr. Amun has denied.

All allegations of abuse remain unproven, and Mr. Amun, like all suspects, is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Path to Safety

According to Asata’s mother, Jasmine Dominique, the teen initially slept on Atlanta’s streets before a Good Samaritan helped her board a bus to seek refuge elsewhere.

The girl ultimately made her way to Tennessee, where she lived under an assumed name while in the care of that state’s Department of Children’s Services.

A Mother’s Joy

Speaking from her Connecticut home, Dominique described dropping her phone in disbelief upon hearing that her daughter had been found.

The revelation came after Tennessee officials pieced together Asata’s true identity through inconsistencies in her statements.

While Asata must first transfer to Georgia’s Department of Family & Children Services, her mother eagerly awaits their upcoming reunion after thirteen long months of separation.
