JACKSON, MS – What should have been a routine repair turned deadly on Monday morning for a Mississippi contractor at a Jackson worksite, according to local authorities. Darrell Sheriff, 41, died in a tragic accident at AJ Materials when hot asphalt poured from a dump truck, engulfing him as he worked beneath the vehicle’s hydraulic line.
A Routine Repair Turns Deadly in Jackson
The Jackson Police Department reported that Sheriff, a private contractor, was conducting maintenance on his truck around 10:30 a.m. when the tailgate unexpectedly opened, spilling a load of hot asphalt onto him. Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade described it as a “horrific situation,” noting the tragedy appeared to be due to a “malfunction with his dump truck.”
Efforts were made by people at the scene to assist Sheriff, who tried to overcome his injuries. But as Chief Wade noted solemnly, “He tried to fight to make it through those injuries, but it was just too enormous for him to survive.”
Family and Police Respond to Tragic Loss
The police chief also expressed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the department. “You know, my prayers, condolences, thoughts, my heart goes out to his family,” Wade told reporters. “I talked to some of his family here on scene. They said he was a good man, a hardworking man, just trying to make a living.”
