CHATAWA, MS — In the murky backwaters of southern Mississippi, where Spanish moss drapes like funeral veils over ancient cypress trees, locals whisper tales of a terrifying creature that’s been haunting their community for generations.
The Monster Strikes
The notorious Chatawa Monster, as residents call it, has left its mark on this sleepy hamlet of just a few hundred souls.
Its calling cards? Deep, inexplicable claw marks carved into trees and an unsettling number of vanishing chickens. While some compare it to Bigfoot, locals insist this is something altogether different – and far more mysterious.
Personally, I think it’s just my hungry hubby wanting to fry up some chicken, but that’s just my opinon! Hehe.
A Circus Gone Wrong
Seriously though, the most widely-circulated origin story reads like something straight out of a carnival nightmare: A circus train, derailed near the twisting Tangipahoa River, allegedly unleashed this cryptid into the surrounding wilderness.
But like all good mysteries, competing theories abound.
Alternative Theories
Some point to Kramer’s Lodge, a once-grand resort built by McComb’s former mayor X. A. Kramer, as the true source of the legend.
The property once housed an exotic menagerie, including monkeys and bears, leading some to speculate that an escaped primate might explain the strange sightings.
Yet others claim the tale sprouted from the creative minds of students at the old St. Mary’s Institute, a boarding school that operated in Chatawa from 1884 to 1975.
A Town’s Dark History
This unincorporated community, whose name derives from the Choctaw language meaning either “to be swollen” or “hunting ground,” has always had a touch of the mysterious about it.
Before the Civil War, New Orleans aristocrats built summer homes here, seeking escape from the city’s heat – and perhaps bringing their own secrets with them.
The Legend Lives On
Today, as the artesian well that drew the town’s earliest settlers continues to flow, so too do the stories of the Chatawa Monster. Each missing chicken and every unexplained scratch mark adds another chapter to this enduring piece of Mississippi folklore.
While numerous witnesses have reported strange occurrences in the Chatawa area, no definitive evidence has yet proven the existence of the alleged monster. All incidents mentioned remain unexplained.
