ST. LOUIS, MO – A Missouri father, Daryl Clemmons, 45, has been convicted of shooting a volunteer youth football coach, Shaquille Latimore, 34, over a dispute about his son’s playing time. The incident unfolded on October 10, 2023, near a practice field in St. Louis, where Latimore was coaching the St. Louis BadBoyz team. A group of 9- and 10-year-old players was nearby during the violent confrontation.

Clemmons was found guilty of assault and armed criminal action following the shooting, which left Latimore, a married father of five, injured but now recovered. Clemmons is set to be sentenced on March 13.

Confrontation Turns Deadly

The shooting stemmed from Clemmons’ frustration that his son wasn’t starting on the team. Both men were armed when they faced off. Latimore, attempting to de-escalate, handed his weapon to a friend and suggested a fist fight. Clemmons refused and instead fired five shots at Latimore.

Latimore later told authorities he didn’t notice Clemmons’ gun until it was too late. He described being shot in the back while trying to run, falling, and then being hit several more times. After the attack, Clemmons taunted him, saying he had warned Latimore he would shoot him. Other adults stepped in after the gunfire erupted.

Clemmons, who once coached the same team before Latimore took over, fled the scene but surrendered to police later that night.

Impact on Community and Team

Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore condemned the violence, stating that it contradicts the values of youth sports, such as teamwork, discipline, and respect. He emphasized the potential danger to the coach, the children, and family members present, noting that the event could have ended in far worse tragedy. Witnesses, especially the young players, were left deeply shaken by the ordeal.

SeMiko Latimore, the victim’s mother, called the shooting senseless. She explained that the youth program aims to steer kids away from street life and teach them moral values. She expressed concern for the children who saw their coach gunned down, pointing out that a stray bullet could have easily struck one of them. The trauma, she added, will linger for those who witnessed the event.
