KANSAS CITY, MO – A violent rampage unfolded in Kansas City, Missouri when a 50-year-old man allegedly killed three members of his girlfriend’s family, shot their dog, and narrowly missed killing a fourth family member as she fled the blood-soaked scene. Authorities described the crime as “horrific,” leaving a neighborhood shaken and investigators piecing together a chilling night of violence.
Armando Navarro Jr., 50, faces multiple charges, including three counts of first-degree murder and four counts of armed criminal action. His victims included his girlfriend, 49-year-old Jodie Hopcus, her 24-year-old daughter Hailey Hopcus, and Jodie’s mother, 73-year-old Sherri Duncan. Navarro is also accused of firing at Jodie’s other daughter, narrowly missing her but shooting off a piece of her hair as she escaped.
Violent Argument Turns Fatal
According to court documents, the nightmare began just after midnight on Sunday. The surviving victim fled to a neighbor’s house and reported the terrifying ordeal, prompting police to respond to a home on NW 65th Street.
Inside, officers found a grisly scene. The bodies of Jodie, Hailey, and Sherri were discovered lifeless, with the family dog also shot dead.
The surviving daughter revealed disturbing details to detectives, explaining that the chaos began with a heated argument between Navarro and her mother, something she said was common.
Jodie had reportedly begged Navarro to leave, but he refused, claiming he had nowhere to go. For nearly an hour, tensions brewed before taking a deadly turn.
From Argument to Carnage
As things temporarily calmed down, Navarro appeared to gather his belongings, going in and out of his room. But moments later, he emerged holding a handgun and opened fire.
Jodie was the first to be hit, struck in the upper arm. With bullets flying, he continued shooting until his gun ran empty. As the terror escalated, Navarro grabbed a knife, but Jodie shielded her daughter to protect her from the attack.
Navarro wasn’t finished. He left and returned with a larger firearm, according to investigators. He then aimed the gun under his own chin, pretending as if he might take his own life. But Jodie, desperate to escape, tried to run for the door. Navarro allegedly shot her in the face before she could make it out.
Her daughter witnessed the horror, noticing her grandmother lying on the floor, motionless. Hailey urged her sister to run, and she sprinted out the door as bullets whizzed past her head. One shot was so close that it tore off a chunk of her hair.
Outside, the survivor hid behind a house, listening as Navarro called out her name, likely searching for her.
The Killer Flees, But Not for Long
After the massacre, Navarro fled in a stolen 2020 Ford Expedition belonging to one of the victims. Hours later, roughly 150 miles away, authorities in Dickinson County, Kansas, found the vehicle in a ditch. Navarro was inside.
Deputies initially stopped to check if he was injured, but after receiving an alert from Kansas City police about a triple homicide suspect on the run, they detained him. Inside the vehicle, officers found a firearm with five spent shell casings.
Chilling Confession to His Son
While on the run, Navarro reportedly called his son around 2 a.m., confessing to the murders. He allegedly told his son that he had killed them all because of ongoing issues and having no place to go.
Navarro was taken into custody and is currently being held in the Dickinson County Jail without bond. Authorities plan to extradite him back to Missouri, where he will face trial for the brutal killings that have rocked the Kansas City community.
