JOPLIN, MO – We recently launched a new weekly podcast, called Angels and Miracles with Jack Norton. This weekly show dives into real-life accounts of faith, hope, and supernatural experiences that inspire and encourage listeners on their spiritual journey. Tune in for a fresh perspective on how God’s hand moves in mysterious ways.

This true story comes from a Missouri newspaper account from the 1990s, but it’s just as inspiring today!

In June 1994, Anita Mayer faced a harrowing situation during what was supposed to be a routine visit to the hospital. Struggling with significant pain in her upper right arm and shoulder, she had gone to the hospital to have X-rays taken.

Her four-year-old daughter, Connie, accompanied her on this trip, strapped securely in her car seat in the family’s 1982 vehicle.

A Sudden Accident

As Anita was turning into the hospital driveway, an unexpected accident occurred. Her impaired right arm made it difficult for her to steer, and the car struck the curb forcefully.

The impact caused the driver’s side door to swing open unexpectedly, and Anita fell out onto the pavement, sustaining multiple injuries. However, the real danger was that the car, now driverless, continued moving toward a nearby lake—with little Connie still inside.

A Mother’s Desperate Attempt

Despite her injuries and the pain in her arm, Anita immediately got to her feet and began to chase after the runaway car. There was no one nearby to help, and the car was moving closer to the water.

As Anita ran, the car struck a park bench, momentarily slowing down its descent toward the lake. However, the bench wasn’t secured well enough to stop the car, which continued rolling into the water.

The Car Submerges

As the car entered the lake, it quickly began to sink. Connie, who had taken some swimming lessons, managed to free herself from her car seat and lower a window. However, the force of the incoming water made it impossible for her to escape.

Anita, who had been chasing the car, reached the water’s edge just as the car was almost completely submerged. With the car sinking rapidly, the situation seemed hopeless.

A Miraculous Rescue

In a moment of desperation, Anita watched in disbelief as something extraordinary happened. Just as the car, which had been sinking quickly, seemed destined to submerge completely, it suddenly lifted as if guided by a divine hand or angel.

This miraculous moment allowed Anita to reach Connie through the window and pull her to safety, just seconds before the car sank completely into the deepest part of the lake.

As Anita clung to her daughter and began to swim back to shore, onlookers from the hospital, who had witnessed the incident, rushed to help. Three men entered the lake to assist in bringing Anita and Connie safely to shore.

A Life Saved, A Family Grateful

Anita and Connie survived the terrifying ordeal, and Anita credits divine intervention for their survival. Now, years later, Anita reflects on that day with profound gratitude, knowing how close she came to losing her daughter.

Every day with Connie is a reminder of the preciousness of life and the blessings that followed what could have been a devastating tragedy.
