BUTTE, MT – A suspect in a Montana bank robbery caught everyone off guard by doing the unexpected: he waited in the lobby for police to arrest him. After robbing a Butte Wells Fargo branch on Tuesday morning, the 45-year-old man surprised law enforcement by staying inside the bank—prompting an easy arrest.

The Robbery Incident

The suspect entered the Wells Fargo branch in Butte shortly before 11 a.m. on January 7, 2025.

Once inside, he approached a teller and demanded cash. The teller complied, handing over money to the man. However, rather than fleeing the scene, the suspect chose to stay put, much to the surprise of the bank’s employees.

The Arrest

Bank employees quickly contacted authorities, alerting them that the suspect had been given the money but remained inside the bank. Law enforcement responded to the scene and arrested the man without any trouble.

“He did not resist. There were no weapons involved,” said Butte-Silver Bow Sheriff Ed Lester in a press release.

Sheriff’s Statement and Speculation

Sheriff Ed Lester shared his thoughts on the unusual turn of events.

“He did demand money from the teller originally and took the money, but then, whether he had second thoughts or Catholic guilt or what, I don’t know, but he decided to sit down and wait for police and did not offer any resistance or anything,” Sheriff Lester said.

The suspect’s choice to stay inside the bank and await his arrest has left many puzzled, but it made for a surprisingly smooth resolution to what could have been a more chaotic situation.
