An icy lake, eerie antlers, and spine-tingling sightings—Montana’s own lake monster legend continues to ripple through local lore. 🌐 #News #PolstonMT #Montana #WeirdNews
POLSON, MT — A chilling tale weaves its way through Montana’s northwest corner, where the deep, cold waters of Flathead Lake have long stirred whispers of a mysterious creature lurking beneath the surface.
Ancient Ice, Antlers, and a Vanishing Tribe
The legend of the Flathead Lake Monster begins with the Kutenai people, whose early ancestors once lived on an island nestled in the lake’s center. During one bitter winter, two young girls spotted what appeared to be a pair of antlers jutting out from the frozen lake. Intrigued, they hacked away at the ice with sharpened stones, attempting to claim their find. But the “antlers” suddenly quivered, splitting the ice wide open as a monstrous head burst upward, thrashing massive antlers.
Using mystical powers, the girls transformed themselves into a ball and a buckskin target to escape—but not everyone was so fortunate. According to the story, half the tribe perished in the lake that day, a loss that echoes in the tribe’s smaller numbers and their later reluctance to venture far from the shoreline. The unsettling legend outlived them, and settlers who arrived afterward claimed sightings of the creature continued.
Century-Old Sightings Still Stir Belief
Local fascination with the creature surged in 1889, when steamboat captain James C. Kerr allegedly witnessed an enormous, whale-like shape beneath the surface while navigating the U.S. Grant. With nearly a hundred passengers aboard, one reportedly fired at the beast before it vanished into the depths. Retired editor Paul Fugleberg would later recount that sightings like this have persisted for well over a century.
Residents dubbed the mystery monster “Flessie”—a nod to Scotland’s infamous “Nessie.” Though modern sightings tend to trickle in at a rate of one or two per year, 1993 marked a frenzy with thirteen separate reports. Descriptions typically portray a massive, snake-like creature stretching between twenty and forty feet in length. Its skin ranges from brownish to a shadowy blue-black, and its sinuous body resembles a blend of eel, whale, or oversized sturgeon.
Eyewitnesses, Rewards, and a “Superfish”
One especially bizarre tale centers on a toddler who reportedly fell into the lake. When asked how he got back to safety, the boy simply said the lake monster lifted him up. While skeptics chalk up such encounters to exaggeration or illusions caused by light, waves, or wildlife, believers hold fast to their accounts.
Explanations have ranged from wandering animals to elaborate pranks. Everything from elk to a stray circus seal has been blamed for fueling the frenzy. Back in the 1950s, a reward from Big Fish Unlimited dared anyone to capture the creature. Although no monster was hauled in, angler C. Leslie Griffith pulled a mammoth 7.5-foot white sturgeon from the lake—tipping the scales at 181 pounds, 1 ounce. That catch now rests in the Polson-Flathead Historical Museum, becoming yet another chapter in the lake’s strange saga.
Did You Know?
- Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western U.S., spanning nearly 200 square miles (Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks).
- White sturgeon, like the one displayed in Polson, can live over 100 years and grow to lengths exceeding 20 feet (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service).
- Cryptid sightings often spike during summer months when lakes see higher boat traffic and tourism, increasing chances for misinterpretation of natural phenomena (Scientific American).
Moment for Reflection
Sometimes the waters of life conceal more than we can understand. In our need for certainty, we often overlook the beauty of wonder and the simplicity of belief. Whether it’s a child’s imagination or a centuries-old tale passed down through generations, there’s comfort in letting mystery live a little longer. In the stillness of a lake or the stories shared around a fire, God gives us moments that stir awe, inspire faith, and gently remind us that not everything needs to be explained to be real.

I saw the creature in November, 2015. I reported it to Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks. They had a retired worker contact me with my permission. Lainie Hantzel had been compiling records on the Flathead Lake Monster, which is now called the Flathead Lake Creature for over one hundred years. He was the world’s expert on this creature. He got permission to record an interview with me on the phone and did not give me any leading info before recording my interview.. When I was done recording, he told me everyone pretty much had the same description. He did not believe they ate people. He thought of them simply as fish eaters.
The head was in the water so I could not see the head, but I did see 3 snake like arcs, sticking up above the water. I found a photo on the internet of the same creature, with the same body, build and 3 arcs above the water. From further research, it’s a fair guess the creature looks like the dragons in the Chinese New Years parades. The head most likely looks like the drawing on the bottles of Flathead Lake Monster soft drinks. Lainie died recently, and around that time his website was taken down. It was a real shame because it was a wealth of information.
I know my sighting was not a figment of my imagination. Because I had been looking for a totally different creature in the lake, one that looks like Elasmosaurus. If you imagine a seal with a very long stretched out neck, a short tale and flippers on a giant body, and sharp teeth to catch fish and other marine animals, that is Elasmosaurus. You can see their skeleton. At the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller, Alberta. It lived during the age of the dinosaurs. In every single case of reported sightings of anything either like Elasmosaurus or the Flathead Lake Creature, they have survived in either the oceans or in very deep lakes. They can be found all over the world. And in a number of places on the edge of the United States in the ocean next to our beaches, or in lakes in the United States. The Flathead Lake Monster is only one of them. Japan even had one of those creatures on a stamp years ago. After the devastating tsunami in the Indian Ocean in the early two thousands, there were pictures of dead animals that washed up onto the shore. There was a picture of a very young small Elasmosaurus type creature.
Wow, Clare! That’s REALLY awesome! We definitely believe you – the world is too beautiful, big and full of mystery to not assume there’s more out there than we all “know”. Thanks so much for commenting – it made our day 🙂 Jack and Kitty
