Winona, Minnesota – Move over, Labrador Retrievers! There’s a new top dog in town, and it’s the adorable French Bulldog. That’s right, for the second year in a row, these playful pups have stolen the hearts of folks in the Midwest and across America, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC).
A Whopping 98,500 Registrations
The AKC just released its dog breed rankings, and the numbers don’t lie. An impressive 98,500 French Bulldogs were registered last year, following an even more astounding 108,000 the year before. It’s clear that people just can’t get enough of these charming little dogs.
To celebrate, let me share the cutest photo I could find of a Frenchie dressed like a cactus. Yes, I actually searched for that. Please don’t ever look through my Google search history! Hehe.
What Makes Frenchies So Popular?
So, what is it about French Bulldogs that has everyone falling in love? Well, the AKC says it’s all about their winning personalities. These dogs are known for being playful, smart, and adaptable. They’re the perfect companion for just about any lifestyle, and they’re small enough to take with you wherever you go.
Frenchies are my hubby Jack’s fave breed, so I guess he’s got pretty good taste in dogs! LOL.
The Rest of the Pack
Of course, French Bulldogs aren’t the only popular pups out there. Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers still hold strong in the top three, while German Shepherds and Poodles round out the top five. Dachshunds have made a big jump this year, moving up three spots in the rankings.
Some Breeds on the Rise
While the top 10 breeds tend to get all the attention, there are some lesser-known dogs that are starting to make a name for themselves. The Papillion, Great Pyrenees, Basenji, and Finnish Lapphund have all moved up in the rankings this year. Who knows? Maybe one of these breeds will be the next big thing.
The Least Popular Breeds
Of course all dogs are adorable, but on the other end of the spectrum, there are some breeds that just haven’t caught on with the general public. The Azawakh, Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen, Norwegian Lundehund, English Foxhound, and Sloughi are the five least popular breeds, according to the AKC. But hey, that just means they’re extra special, right?
A Grain of Salt
Now, it’s important to keep in mind that these rankings only include the 200 breeds recognized by the AKC. They don’t take into account mixed-breed dogs or deliberate hybrids like Doodles. And registration is voluntary, so these numbers might not tell the whole story. But still, it’s fun to see which breeds are capturing people’s hearts each year.
