ST. PAUL, MN – A significant musical find has occurred: a previously unknown composition by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has resurfaced, over 250 years after it was created. Titled “Serenade in C,” this 12-minute piece showcases the early genius of a young Mozart.
A Hidden Treasure: The Rediscovery of Mozart’s Serenade
The composition was discovered in the Leipzig Municipal Libraries, located about 280 miles from Salzburg, Austria, where Mozart was born in 1756. By the age of five, he was already a child prodigy, performing for European royalty. As a teenager, he began to make a name for himself as a composer, spending formative years in Salzburg and Vienna before heading to Italy in 1769.
Researchers believe “Serenade in C” was composed in the mid- to late-1760s. The Leipzig library team was compiling an edition of the Köchel catalog, a comprehensive listing of Mozart’s works, when they found a mysterious bound manuscript containing a handwritten score in brown ink. The manuscript is attributed to “Wo[l]fgang Mozart,” though the handwriting does not match that of the composer, indicating it is likely a copy made around 1780.
From Manuscript to Masterpiece: Unveiling the Music
This newly discovered serenade consists of seven movements specifically arranged for a string trio, featuring two violins and a bass. According to the International Mozarteum Foundation, which is dedicated to preserving Mozart’s legacy, the style of the piece aligns with other works from the 1760s. Ulrich Leisinger, head of research at the foundation, noted that Mozart’s style had evolved significantly by his late teens, making this piece reflective of his earlier years.
Many chamber works from Mozart’s youth were thought to be lost, but this piece survived, likely due to his sister’s efforts. “It seems that—thanks to a series of fortunate circumstances—a complete string trio has made it to Leipzig,” Leisinger remarked. He suggested that she may have preserved the work as a cherished reminder of her brother, possibly even written for her.
Throughout his life, Mozart composed over 600 works, including renowned pieces like the “Requiem in D Minor” and “The Jupiter Symphony.” The rediscovered “Serenade in C” has been renamed “Ganz kleine Nachtmusik” in the Köchel catalog, possibly as a nod to his famous serenade, “Eine kleine Nachtmusik.”
Echoes of the Past: Serenade’s First Performance in Centuries
The newly uncovered piece was performed for the first time in centuries on September 19 during the unveiling of the new catalog in Salzburg. A string trio played the work again on September 21 at the Leipzig Opera, drawing a full house of eager listeners.
This discovery highlights the importance of preserving musical history and reminds us of Mozart’s lasting influence. His works continue to resonate with audiences today, proving that the beauty of his music transcends time.
