WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a crime that stunned even the most cold hearted in Washington, D.C., a Maryland man has been sentenced to 68 years in federal prison after brutally murdering the mother of his infant child and her mother, then setting their Washington, D.C., apartment on fire with the baby inside.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced the sentence on Monday following Keanan Turner’s conviction for multiple violent offenses, including two counts of first-degree murder.

A Deadly Relationship and a Shocking Motive

Keanan Turner, 35, had been in a relationship with Ebony Wright, who later became pregnant. According to court records, Turner pressured Wright to terminate the pregnancy, but she refused. After giving birth, Wright filed a custody and child support lawsuit against Turner, escalating tensions between the two.

On April 12, 2021, Turner requested to meet with his child at Wright’s Washington, D.C., apartment. Present at the apartment were Wright, her mother Wanda Wright, a female relative, and the infant.

A Brutal Crime Unfolds

During his visit, Turner suddenly shot Ebony Wright in the head while she was holding their child. Wanda Wright, Ebony’s mother, was also fatally shot in the back of the head. Turner then entered a bedroom and shot a third female relative in the face; although gravely injured, she managed to survive.

Turner, intent on destroying all ties to the child support case, lit the custody paperwork on fire, igniting the apartment with the baby still inside. After setting the fire, he fled the scene, leaving the survivors to fend for themselves in the blaze.

A Heroic Escape

Despite her life-threatening injuries, the third woman managed to rescue the infant from the burning apartment and call 911. Emergency responders arrived, but Turner was already on the run.

Justice in Court

Following his capture, Turner was charged with multiple offenses, including first-degree murder with aggravating circumstances, assault with intent to kill while armed, aggravated assault, and arson. His charges also included four counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence and carrying a pistol without a license.

At the Oct. 18 sentencing hearing, prosecutors asked for life imprisonment without parole, emphasizing the “substantial planning” involved and Turner’s “lack of remorse” for the brutal killings. The prosecution argued that Turner committed the murders to avoid paying child support, a motive they called “heinous.”

The Verdict: 68 Years in Prison

Superior Court Judge Maribeth Raffinan sentenced Turner to 68 years in federal prison. While not the life sentence prosecutors requested, the judge’s ruling reflects the gravity of Turner’s actions and the permanent harm inflicted on the victims’ family.

This devastating crime leaves behind a family shattered by unimaginable loss. As we reflect on their pain, we are reminded to seek comfort in one another and cherish the moments we have with loved ones. “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” (Psalm 145:18) May those touched by this tragedy find healing and strength in the days ahead.
