MILTON, KY â A quiet junkyard in Trimble County, Kentucky turned into the center of a local legend in the summer of 1975, after residents claimed to have seen a massive reptilian creature slithering through the wreckage. Reports described the beast as stretching nearly 15 feet long, resembling an oversized monitor lizard, and capable of hissing with startling force.
Monster in the Metal Heap
It all began in July when Clarence Cableâknown around town as âTuffyââwas making his rounds at the Blue Grass Body Shop, just north of Milton near Cable Creek. As he stepped through rows of rusted wrecks, something unexpected caught his attention. Emerging from the shadows was a creature with amphibian-like eyes, a pale jawline, and a striking pattern of black and white stripes dotted with quarter-sized specks. The reptile allegedly hissed before retreating behind the debris.
The following day, Clarenceâs brother Garrett had his own run-in. While sorting through old car hoods, he saw them suddenly shake and shift. Thatâs when the lizard’s head and shoulders poked through. Frightened by the sight, Garrett ran to get his brother, but by the time they returned with weapons, the creature had vanished.

A Bigger Beast Returns
Things escalated when Clarence reportedly saw the animal once againâthis time estimating it to be nearly 15 feet in length. He lobbed a rock at the beast, which responded with a hiss before escaping into a thicket. Armed with a rifle, Clarence fired into the brush, but found no trace of the mysterious creature afterward. Clarence didnât know if he killed the creature.
By early August, the story had gained enough traction to spark a community-wide search. Locals combed the surrounding area near the junkyard, hoping to find evidence of the lurking lizard. But despite their efforts, no tracks, droppings, or physical signs were ever recovered.
Theory from the Yard
In conversations with the Trimble Banner, Clarence speculated that the creature may have hatched from eggs unknowingly transported from the western United States.
He believed that one of the junked vehicles recently brought to the lot might have carried the lizardâs origins, and the increasing removal of wreckage that spring could have exposed its hiding placesâleading to the sudden string of sightings.
