HOUSTON, TX – A routine shift change turned into a shocking discovery for one Houston, Texas police officer on Saturday. As the officer from the Mental Health Division approached his patrol vehicle around 2:30 p.m., he was met with an unsettling scene— a deceased man was found lying in the back seat.

How the man got there, and the circumstances surrounding his death, are now the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Houston Police Department.

The Weather and Possible Shelter

The discovery came amid a cold and rainy afternoon in Houston. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures had dropped into the upper 50s just before the officer found the man. With a rainstorm sweeping through the area, authorities believe the man may have been seeking shelter in the patrol car.

In a statement, police noted, “At this time, it is unknown how the male entered the vehicle and it appears he may have been seeking shelter from the weather.”
